Gottfried cannily hid Rossio's thematic point in his own star persona, making his performance far more complex than it needed to be. His performance may not make viewers think of symbolism and Shakespeare but has made countless fans laugh for generations and served as an inspiration in the most unlikely places. Unlike that play, however, Gilbert Gottfried made him hilariously annoying in the best way possible. Much like his Shakespearean namesake, Iago encourages and reveals the worst tendencies in those around him. However, Rossio's explanation suggests that Iago's presence has more depth than meets the eye. Some might say this is reading too much into a Disney film's need to have multiple animal sidekicks. They're willing to grow as people, which is the one thing Jafar isn't capable of. If Jafar's true emotions are reflected in Iago's baser nature, Aladdin and Jasmine defy their animal friend's unquestioning acceptance of their statues. He's more content to lounge around the palace than she is and is far more defensive against Aladdin's intrusions as well. Jasmine's tiger, Rajah, is similarly conservative. Abu doesn't even like it when Aladdin shares their stolen bread with hungry children. Aladdin's sidekick Abu is far greedier and prone to petty theft than he is, despite Aladdin's reputation as an unrepentant thief. Knowing Iago is supposed to be an outlet for Jafar's cruder emotions raises questions about the animal companions of the film's other human characters.
